Registered Nurse (DIV 1)

Registered Nurses with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia work within a number of specialities such as general medicine, surgical wards, critical care, theatres, mental health and aged care.

A Registered Nurse (Div 1) is a highly trained and qualified healthcare professional who is responsible for providing a range of healthcare services to patients across a variety of healthcare settings.

Some of the key responsibilities of a Registered Nurse (Div 1) include Assessing and planning patient care, Administering medications and treatments, Monitoring and documenting patient progress, Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, Educating patients and families and of course Registered Nurses are often the primary advocate for their patients, ensuring that their healthcare needs are met and that they receive the highest possible standard of care.

A Registered Nurse (Div 1) is a multifaceted and challenging one that requires a high degree of skill, knowledge, and professionalism.

 

Endorsed Nurse (DIV 2)

Enrolled Nurses work closely within a multi-disciplinary team, communicating with medical staff, internal service providers as well as patients and their families.

Working within a team nursing model of care, enrolled nurses use an evidenced based approach to the clinical care of their patients and engage in professional development opportunities. While participating in beside handovers, admitting, and discharging of patients and daily patient care, patients and their families are encouraged to participate in all stages of their healthcare through compassion and empathy. All practice is in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia National Competency Standards for Enrolled Nurses.

Managers

Nurse Unit Manager – NUMs work as registered nurses who have a number of years of clinical experience and postgraduate qualifications within their specialty field.

NUMs excel at leading a team and have highly developed communication skills. Working within both the clinical and executive environment requires the utilisation of skills within workforce management as well as fostering the development and teaching of other staff.

Medical / Surgical Wards

Medical ward nurses work with a range of areas including general medicine, renal, endocrinology, cardiology, oncology, neurological and respiratory medicine and acute on chronic medical conditions. Surgical ward nurses work within a range of areas including upper and lower GI surgery, hepatobiliary, head and neck, maxilla-facial, urology, plastic, thoracic and orthopaedic surgery. Medical and surgical nurses provide care to patients and their families while working within a multidisciplinary team.

Critical Care

Critical Care is a specialized department in hospitals that encompasses services in the Emergency Department (ED), Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), and Coronary Care Unit (CCU). Nurses in this department provide care to critically ill patients and closely collaborate with doctors and specialists to assess, treat, and monitor their condition while also fulfilling their basic care needs. Many nurses in Critical Care hold a Post Graduate certificate.

Aged Care​

Providing care for some of the most vulnerable older people within the community, nurses work within high- and low-level care facilities, including residential care and transitional care. Registered and enrolled nurses work within a multidisciplinary team to support the ongoing care of patients and their families.

Rehabilitation

Nurses provide rehabilitation support to patients with complex musculoskeletal, orthopaedic, amputee, stroke, and neurological conditions. Delivering support to patients and families through strong communication skills and working within a multidisciplinary team promotes physical function and transition home.

Paediatrics

Paediatric nurses are healthcare professionals who specialize in providing medical care for infants, children, and adolescents. Nurses are trained to understand the unique physical, emotional, and developmental needs of children and are skilled at communicating and working with young patients and their families.

Operating Theatres

Operating theatres nurses are highly skilled and specialized nurses who play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of patient care during surgical procedures.

Neonatal

Neonatal nurses are specialized Registered Nurses (RNs) who provide specialized care to newborn infants, particularly those who are premature, critically ill, or require surgical intervention.

Mental Health

Registered nurses provide care to people with mental health disorders. Enhancing recovery through respectful therapeutic relationships, nurses assist patients to build on their strengths and resilience.

Midwifery

Registered midwives work alongside a multi-disciplinary team to support and advise women during pregnancy, labour, and the post-partum period. CSSD

Central Sterile Supply Department is a specialised area supporting the running of operating theatres. CSSD nurses are responsible for the collection, decontamination, assembling and packing, sterilisation, and distribution of sterile goods to operating suites. Key roles include ensuring instrument accuracy and flow through CSSD meets operational needs.

Acute Nursing

Nurses work with a range of areas in acute nursing. Such as renal, cardiology, oncology, neurological and respiratory medicine and acute chronic medical conditions. Providing care to patients and their families while working within a multidisciplinary team. Roles include planning, assessment and delivery of care and ongoing communication with senior clinicians, patients, and families.
